MEET OUR ART WITHOUT CONCEPT WINNER!

A while back, we challenged you to use your designing skills to create art without a concept. Now, after 722 killer design submissions, we have a winner! R. Tofan Barmalisi’s “Thunder Power" has been chosen as the winning design, and we got the chance to sit down with him and ask a few questions. Check out the interview below!

How about a quick introduction?

Hey, guys! My name is R.Tofan Barmalisi (barmalisiRTB), aka Barmalizer. I live in a small town in West Java, Indonesia. As an artist and as a father of two children, I spend my days working on artwork and, most important, taking time to play with the kids.

How did it feel to get the notification that you won?

Surely very pleased! It was a highly awaited message.

What did “art without concept" mean to you?

For me it means freedom: freedom in making artwork. I can pour anything in my mind like a child who draws freely without any limitation.

What was your brainstorming process like when deciding what to draw for this challenge?

I thought of bright colors with a splash of style that I normally do.

Do you have any advice for artists that get stuck when trying to think of what to draw?

Leave it. Go out to refresh the eyes and the mind, watch a movie that may inspire a good idea, or do anything you like until you feel ready to continue to work.

Do you have any work-in-progress photos you can share with us?

Thunder Power showcases this God of Thunder character - what was the inspiration for this?

The inspiration came when it was raining with very loud thunder sound. I imagined someone throwing lightning to earth like angry Zeus.

If you woke up one morning and was able to shoot thunder out of your hands, what would be the first thing you’d do?

I would visit a fashion designer to create a super hero costume, of course!

Do you plan on doing more work in this “without concept" style?

Yes! “Without Concept" artwork is fun to do.

Any last words/shoutouts?

Thank you to Threadless who chose my work to be printed, and also to all those who have supported me. You’re all cool!
