Meet the Music Design Challenge Winner!

Over here at Threadless, we love it when a great band comes in to jam, or a sweet tune comes on over the speakers (especially this song, which we play every Friday, of course). It’s possible the only thing we love more are the awesome designs you guys submitted for our Music Challenge - which were all off the charts! We figured this challenge would be a hit, since we know you all love to jam as much as we do. So, without further ado, we’d like to present the grand prize winner: Eduardo San Gil from Spain, for his design “Musical Alphabet”! Read on to learn more about Eduardo, and don’t forget to pick up his great new tee here.

Congrats on your winning design “Musical Alphabet”! Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a freelance designer and illustrator, currently living in Barcelona, who discovered Threadless a few years ago. Since then, I’ve been in love with this shop; it has pushed so many designers throughout the world to make really great things.

Are you a big music fan? Is that why you decided to participate in this challenge?

Of course! Music is more than entertainment or making us feel a range of emotions; the artists who create it influence our way of being and seeing the world.

“Music” is a pretty broad theme. How did you land on your super cool concept?

I wanted to make something that I would love to wear.

How did you master the challenge of making every musician look like not only him or herself, but also a letter?

In some cases I could match the letter with the artist straight away, without any problems. That motivated me to make the design and work constantly, even when it became more difficult.

Which character/letter in your design was the toughest to create?

At the start, I made a list of artists/letters without really knowing how I would draw them, so I looked at some letters and said, “How can I represent Madonna with an M?” However, when I grabbed my pencil, I realized that the transformation process became intuitive and swift.

Can you tell us a little about the process you took creating this design? If you have any WIP’s to share, please do!

I went to the park and lay down on the grass with loads of papers and notes. I thought about the artists and the letter combinations as if it were a crossword puzzle and a friend gave me a helping hand. Then I did pencil sketches, and then scanned and vectorised them.

Of all the musicians represented in your design, who is your favorite, and why?

I love Queen and Nirvana; not just for their music, but also because it was so easy to design them.

In what ways does music inspire you as an artist?

Music wakes me up in the mornings and motivates me to work.

Do you have a go-to song or band that helps you get the creative energy flowing?

I don’t have just one specific song or group; I like almost all kinds of music. When I’m designing, I usually listen to playlists with lots of artists from different times and countries.

Any other shout-outs?

Thanks to you guys for creating these challenges that motivate all of us to create new things! Also, thanks to the Threadless community for encouraging designers with their comments.
