FROM THE LAND OF THRA, OUR DARK CRYSTAL WINNER IS HERE!
Gelflings, and Skeksis, and Garthim, oh my! After over 180 Dark Crystal-inspired submissions and 117,405 votes, we have a winning design! After much deliberation amongst the Mystics, “Dark Crystal Dreams" by Martin Knight is the winner of this challenge! Take a moment to congratulate Martin on his third printed design, then check out his interview below!
Congrats on your winning design “Dark Crystal Dreams”! Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am Martin from the South of England and work under the name MindSqueeZe. I am a lucid and vivid dreamer and sometimes prefer the surreal dream world over the reality we believe we’re living in. I work as creatively as I can with digital media and actively push mobile photography and editing techniques. When not working with digital bits and bytes I am out mountain biking!
Why did you decide to participate in the Dark Crystal Challenge?
Since my last t-shirt design I created for Threadless (“Crest Craft” for the first Minecraft challenge), I’ve been looking to push my techniques and try different styles, so this fantasy style challenge was a great start. Not to mention that the film was a big part of my growing up!
Do you remember your first reaction to the movie? If so, what was it?
I remember my first reaction to the film like it was yesterday! I felt a sense of adventure and freedom, but also terror at the same time. This film really scared me as a child! The strange sounds and the characters were very frightening.
Why has it always remained one of your favorites?
I am a massive fan of Jim Henson and Frank Oz, and they have created my love for fantasy. I am a big dreamer and always hope at the end of the day, when I go to sleep, that I can start an adventure in my dreams just like the journey Jen has in The Dark Crystal. The filming was groundbreaking at the time so it will always be a fan favourite.
How did you come up with the design you created for this challenge?
It’s a style I’ve wanted to do for a while (limited colours, silhouette type, and sense of adventure), so the challenge was perfect and I can’t wait to submit more.
It seems to really capture the essence of the film. How did you accomplish this?
I knew it needed a sense of adventure, and to capture that I wanted a view which had the iconic Skeksis Tower and the journey towards freedom. I put the film on repeat while I was working on the design, got into the world of Thra, and tried to imagine exactly what the adventure would feel like.
If the Mystics and the Skeksis both discovered your t-shirt, how do you think each of the dueling forces would react?
I would hope if both the Mystics and the Skeksis come across the t-shirt, they would be overwhelmed by the awesomeness of the tee and everyone would live in peace and harmony. We can dream!
Please tell us a bit about the process of your design. Feel free to include any WIP images if available!
The process included painting in Photoshop with basic brushes and a few specialist brushes. I built up the overall layout and feel and then later modified and changed things until I got to something I was happy with. I have included a large photo stage by stage to show you the process:
If Jen could have been clothed in your t-shirt during his journey for an extra level of defense, what kind of special powers would it have equipped him with?
It would definitely give him the power of manipulation. He would put the shirt on and the design would give him slight future-seeing powers, as well as the ability to move certain things on the t-shirt so they also move in real life. I would say it would give him the power of invisibility but then no one would see the cool t-shirt design!
Any other shout-outs?
Only to you, Threadless! Thank you very much.
