As we wrap up another week of hard work, let’s get to know next week’s printed artists a tad bit better. We wanted to know what their medium of choice is, so we asked ‘em! Before you head out of the office to start your weekend adventure, check out the quotes and designs below. Head on back to Threadless on Monday to shop around for your favorites.
Q: As an artist, what’s your medium of choice and why?
“My medium of choice is a mix between Indian ink and digital mediums such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator that I use mainly for coloring. However, sometimes the coloring part can be substituted by other traditional materials.”
“My favourite medium is Photoshop because it’s easy to use, can create wonders and it’s effective. I’m loving it!”
“I went to see a medium on the Lower East Side a few years ago. She contacted the spirit of one of my ancestors, who warned me to sketch only with ballpoint pens I stole from banks and hotels.”
“I guess I don’t have a favourite medium. For me, constantly trying out new things, mixing media, and switching between them keeps the fun in my work. For my tee, I did the artwork completely as vector on my PC, which I love to do. For other occasions, I might prefer to draw on paper with ink and maybe color it with aquarells.”
"I work on a small Cintiq and absolutely love the flexibility of this tool, but that being said, all my projects start with a pencil and a piece of paper (and a beer)."
“I would have to say Photoshop and my good old graphic tablet, as they have become indispensable for me. Even when I do an ink drawing or an oil painting, there’s always a moment in the process where I’m going to use digital medium.”
MEET OUR DRAWING CHALLENGE WINNER!
When it comes to creating sweet art, sometimes all you need to do is put a pen to paper and see what happens. That’s what we were hoping for when we launched the Drawing design challenge, and boy, did you guys ever impress us with your amazing skills! We ooh’ed and aah’ed at about a jillion awesome submissions, and ultimately named GACI from Muntinlupa City in the Philippines our grand prize winner for his design “Sleepless Ornamentation”. Read a little more about him below, and if you’re as impressed with his drawing as we were, don’t forget to snag his tee when it launches tomorrow!
Congrats on your winning design “Sleepless Ornamentation”! Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a fun-headed Filipino designer working for an advertising company and also as a freelance illustrator. I’ve been learning and striving in the world of art for almost four years now and I work on different skills based on the trends and needs of my clients. My art is product of my imagination and passion.
When you sat down to create a submission for this challenge, did you have any type of direction in mind? Or did you just start drawing?
Nope! I just sat down, turned the music on, and started to draw.
What is the meaning behind the owl, skull, and other motifs that make up your drawing?
I love to draw skulls because they’re easy to draw. Ha! One night, when it was already late, I decided to put an owl on it to symbolize sleepless nights.
You have an incredible knack for detail. How did you work to develop this talent?
Frequent practice. I make sure to draw something everyday.
It seems like you could have continued to add even more to this design. How do you know when you’re done with a drawing?
When the artwork becomes balanced.
Your original submission featured three colors: orange on the top half, which faded into purple and then blue. Did these colors represent anything in particular about the design?
Nope, I just find it a perfect combination for a white tee.
What tools do you prefer to use while drawing and why?
Pens and markers. They’re comfortable to use!
Do you stay up all night sketching often?
Two to three times a week. :)
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever drawn in the middle of the night?
Different hand gestures. I almost go crazy every time trying to draw them perfectly! Haha!
Any other shout-outs?
Thank you so much Threadless for choosing my design as the grand winner! This is my first print… yay! I punched the wall when I got your e-mail, haha! To my friends who support and continue voting for my entries, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
A new week of tees means a new collection of incredible artists from around the world to hear from! We know that fantastic works of art don’t just appear out of thin air, and that there is usually a really intriguing story behind each design that rolls through Threadless. That’s why, this week, we asked artists to give us a little insight into the story behind their new designs. Enjoy!
Q: What’s the story behind your design?
“I wanted to create a design that was mysterious and wondrous. The person in the design is solving a difficult puzzle and the solution is being revealed to him in magnificent fashion. I knew that Nicebleed could make this design pop with his skills and he did an amazing job. Collaborating with him on this design was an incredible experience.” - Kyle Cobban (Buy this tee now!)
“This particular design was one of Chris’ works that he was proudest of and it represents a significant point in his growth as an artist. It is more than just a t-shirt design. It is a memory. A memory of a loving friend, a wonderful son, a caring brother, a beautiful boy.” - Erika Jee, friend of Chris (Buy this tee now!)
“The year was nineteen ninety-something when a young boy watched a really funny movie and a really weird cartoon (not at the same time). He waited twenty something years for an LED light bulb to go off and then he got it! Why not put the characters from these two cool things together in one design? I mean, one guy has brown hair and the other has blonde. They sit on a couch in the same spots and they like music. I could’ve waited another twenty years for someone else to design the obvious or I could just do it myself now. So, that’s what I did! Schwing fartknocker!” (Buy this tee now!)
"It started with the infamous music video starring a pop singer and a wrecking ball. Throw in a princess, a barking ball, chain, and some 8-bit nostalgia, and you get Chomping Ball.” (Buy this tee now!)
“My idea comes from the ‘anti-gravity lean’ of Michael Jackson. It reminds me of italic font, and how fun it would be if we could click and select Michael as the font on the screen. Of course, I think people would want to see ‘bold italic’.” (Buy this tee now!)
“My daily commute is about two hours and sometimes more if traffic is heavier. The idea for this design came to me as I was sitting in traffic one day, thinking of ways that the painful commute could be better. I figured sitting in space would make it a bit more interesting at least! Can you spot me sitting in traffic in the design?” (Buy this tee now!)
