The Internet Said WHAT!?!!

As anyone who has ever perused the internet in this day and age knows, it’s chock full of completely ridiculous gibberish. Between phrases like “on fleek”, “YOLO”, “turnt up”, “bae”, the internet language of nonsense internetsays_smallbanneris equal parts entertaining and horrifying, especially when people string this absurd jargon together in an effort to actually communicate. To celebrate the world wide web’s special speech, we launched the Sh*t The Internet Says challenge, and today we present to you the winner: Katie Campbell, for her design “Dat Ass Doe!”, which is, frankly, perfect. “Dat Ass Doe!” by Katie Campbell

Congrats on your winning design “Dat Ass Doe!” for the Sh*t The Internet Says challenge! What have you been up to lately?

Hey, thanks so much! I had a blast with this contest. A lot has been going on in my world. I just had my last day working at SCAD after 7 years. My fiancé is going to study FX Makeup so we are headed west to Los Angeles! Not sure If I will try freelance out there or search for a new job, Either way, adventure awaits!

It’s finally summer! Do you feel like the summer season invigorates your creativity in any way?

Summertime definitely brightens my mood and inspires more light-hearted designs :) The challenge is balancing work and play. It’s so hard to not want to be outside enjoying this weather. FOMO is real (fear of missing out).

So, you’re from Savannah. Does your hometown have any inspiring art festivals or events that you look forward to over the summer season?

Savannah is beautiful year-round, but once May hits there are some great activities that I enjoy taking part in. SCAD hosts a Sidewalk Arts Festival and Sand Arts Festival for currents students, Alumni and staff.

Ok, onto your design. Which is, frankly, amazing. How’d you come up with it?

I’m not sure exactly where I first read/heard the phrase “Dat ass doe” but like any internet trend, it spread like wildfire. I found myself using it a little too much. You really can plug in any word in place of ass and make it work. I searched the phrase in urban dictionary to make sure I was spelling it right and as soon as I saw the words ASS and DOE together I knew I had a concept. To really seal the deal I drew the backsides of the animals.

Would you mind taking us through the process of creating this design? Feel free to share any WIP’s, if you have!

The phrase has an urban feel to it, so I wanted a street wear inspired style. Clean lines, large type, and fun colors. I referenced a bunch of angles of donkeys and does/deer to get the perfect angle of the animals, modified a graffiti typeface, and played with some fresh colors.

Do you get a kick out of the sh*t the internet says, or do you find it completely ridiculous?

I have a love/hate relationship with the sh*t the internet says. It’s definitely ridiculous, but extremely entertaining. I feel lucky that my generation grew up before the internet became so influential. We are able to jokingly use the crazy phrases and memes that become popular, but I’m afraid the younger kids see it as the cool way to talk and write.

Ok, we know you have one: what’s your favorite internet slang that you simply can’t help but love?

I totes like abbreviating words for fun or adding hashtags #fornoreason.

If you could make up the next big internet slang term, what would it be?

My friend Hayley and I joked that my style is #lezfash or when I’m at work, #lezbusinesscas. Not sure if that’s a thing yet.

When not thinking about silly internet absurdities and making awesome art, what are you typically up to?

When I’m not working, I’m usually hanging out with my fiancé, Madison, and our dog Swaggy.

Any other shout-outs?
