Art can sometimes be a bit of a paradox. Because sure, we artists draw and paint and create because we love it. But when we’re both the artist and our own critic – which we often are – it can be hard to actually get started. That’s why Inktober was so great in the Fall. It encouraged creatives to get out there (er, stay in and sit down) and just make something.

Well if you too are craving something like Inktober, you’re in luck! Because here to lead us from spring to summer is May’s very own version of it: MerMay!
Kinda like the other best May pun – the Justin Timberlake “It’s gonna be May!” meme – it’s exactly what it sounds like: draw Mermaids and Mermen!
There are a few different artists and zines doing the Mermay challenge – including Animator Island and the Character Design Challenge (CDChallenge) by the webzine Character Design Reference – which all have different perks. But the main perk? Art practice and a great excuse to draw mermaids nonstop for an entire month (not that you ever need an excuse for that, tbh).
We still have little bit of May time left, so jump on the #Mermay fun while you can, and share your mermaid photos here in the comments and on social with the hashtag #Mermay! (The urge to say, “go and MerMAKE something” was super strong, good thing I didn’t drop it in somewhere…)
In the meantime, check out these amazing examples from Instagram!
